The Minority Caucus in Parliament have expressed support for ongoing campaigns by citizens and the Minister for Communications to ensure a significant reduction of DStv subscription prices in the country.
In a press statement dated August 3 and signed by the ranking Member on the information and communications Committee in parliament, Hon. Matthew Nyindam, the group said the concerns raised by Ghanaians over the high cost of DStv packages, especially in comparison to other countries in the region, were valid and deserved urgent attention.
They commended the patriotic citizens who started the campaign and welcomed the efforts by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to protect the interests of Ghanaian consumers.
According to the Minority, subscription fees must be fair and reflect the current state of Ghana’s economy.
They emphasised the need for solutions to be grounded in law, fairness and constructive dialogue rather than through public confrontation.
To help address the matter, the Minority revealed that they have formally written to the Chairman of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee, requesting that the Minister and representatives of MultiChoice Ghana be summoned before the Committee.
They believe this engagement will help Parliament assess the current pricing model, ensure that the National Communications Authority (NCA) is effectively carrying out its consumer protection role, and push for a fair outcome for the Ghanaian people.
The statement reiterated the Minority’s commitment to promoting fairness, transparency and accountability in the pricing of pay TV services in Ghana.
