The Northern Development Forum (NDF) has condemned the fatal shootings of three students at the Bawku and Nalerigu Senior High Schools over the past weekend.
The Forum expressed deep concern and sorrow over the recent surge in violence in the Upper East and North East Regions and appealed for calm, tolerance and the immediate cessation of hostilities in both regions.
This was contained in statement, signed and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga by Major Albert B. Don-Chebe (Rtd), Chairman of the Forum.
“When students, our future, become victims of unrestrained violence, we must together, with the backing of all Ghanaians, assert that enough is enough! Please let the guns stay silent! Stop the killings!!,” the statement said.
According to the NDF, the spate of violence, which led to the deaths of the students had become an “unpalatable spectacle” that threatened the collective development aspirations of the northern part of Ghana.
The statement called on traditional authorities including the Nayiri, the Overlord of Mamprugu, and the Zugraan, the Overlord of Kusaug, to call for restraint among their respective communities.
It also encouraged active engagement in the peace efforts being led by His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to bring lasting peace to the affected areas.
The statement further appealed to all sons and daughters of the five regions of northern Ghana and other well-meaning Ghanaians to support initiatives aimed at ending what it described as a “distressing fratricide.”
The statement also extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
“As a development forum representing the people of Northern Ghana, we are ready, prepared, and willing to devote all our energies to end this disconcerting situation,” the statement emphasised.
The NDF is a non-partisan organisation made up of individuals from the five regions of northern Ghana, working to promote peace and development in northern Ghana and contribute to the broader agenda of equitable national development.
