The Ghana Police Service has firmly refuted claims circulating on social media and some news platforms that it conducted a raid at the residence of Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari, the Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), resulting in the death of one person.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Service described the reports as false and urged the public to disregard them.
“The Police has not undertaken any such raid. We urge the general public to treat these misleading claims with disdain,” the statement emphasized.
According to the Police, a preliminary investigation has revealed that at about 1:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) responded to a robbery incident in Techiman.
Intelligence reports had indicated suspicious activity involving a robbery gang that has long been under surveillance for terrorizing residents in the area.
Upon arrival, officers spotted suspects scaling a wall in an apparent attempt to evade arrest. During the operation, one of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
The deceased has since been identified as a known member of a robbery syndicate notorious for stealing motorbikes in Techiman and transporting them to Kumasi for resale.
Police investigations later confirmed that the location of the attempted robbery was indeed the residence of Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari, but stressed that the premises were not the target of any police operation.
“The gang had returned to Techiman that night for a similar operation when they were intercepted by the Police,” the statement noted.
A motorbike and various tools believed to have been used in the attempted robbery were retrieved from the scene. A targeted manhunt is currently underway to apprehend other suspects who managed to escape.
To ensure transparency and a comprehensive investigation, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed a team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and urged the public to verify information from credible sources before dissemination.
