Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has praised the Black Queens for their inspiring performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing them as “national heroines.”
The remarks were made during a courtesy visit by the team to Parliament on Tuesday, following their bronze medal finish in MoroccoâGhana’s first WAFCON podium placement in nearly a decade. Led by head coach Nora Häuptle (Kim) and captain Portia Boakye, the team was received with a standing ovation from Members of Parliament.
Hon. Amoako commended the players for demonstrating courage, unity, and patriotism throughout the tournament.
“You have reignited hope and pride in Ghanaian football,” he told the team. “Your resilience on the pitch reflects the strength of Ghanaian women.”
He further noted that the Black Queens' achievement serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting women in sports and ensuring equal opportunities across all levels.
The visit also triggered renewed calls within Parliament for improved welfare, infrastructure, and funding for women’s football. MPs from both sides of the House acknowledged the team's impact and called for sustained investment in the women's game.
