Cameron Antwi was the heartbeat of Newport County’s dramatic EFL Cup Qualification Final triumph over Barnet, scoring a superb first-half goal and calmly converting his penalty in a tense shootout.
The English-born Ghanaian midfielder opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a powerful strike after Lee Jenkins nodded down a corner. Newport doubled their lead just before halftime, thanks to a long-range rocket from Michael Reindorf.
But Barnet fought back. Goals from Ryan Galvin and Rhys Browne in stoppage time dragged the tie to penalties, setting up a nerve-racking finish.
Antwi, who impressed throughout and played the full 90 minutes, stepped up and slotted his penalty into the bottom left corner, keeping Newport in front. Bobby Kamwa and Cameron Evans followed with confident finishes, while goalkeeper Nik Tzanev saved Kane Smith’s effort to seal the 4â2 shootout win.
Newport fans roared with delight, celebrating Antwi’s influence and their team’s resilience.
Newport County now focuses on their league clash with Notts County on August 2.
