Inaki Williams has condemned the extreme pressure surrounding his brother Nico’s transfer saga, revealing that someone even went to his brother’s home and smashed a car window.
In a powerful statement at Lezama, the Ghanaian forward expressed his frustration with how clubs, particularly Barcelona, tried to lure Nico away from Athletic Club.
Nico Williams signed a new contract extending his stay with Athletic Club for ten years.
"Ultimately, Nico is a world-class player, and it's normal that there's so much noise around him . There are things that we haven't been able to understand. Ultimately, this is part of life; it's a process. I think Nico, along with all the fans and journalists, have learned that these things happen, and that I'm sure that in a few years, when a youth player like Nico excels, which will happen, we won't make the same mistakes," Inaki Williams said.
"We all know how the world of football works and the pressure they wanted to put on all the fans and my brother. A media campaign that they may have thought would work for them . I think that Athletic, as a club, when they want or pursue a player, they do it on the sly. I think that external noise has done a lot of damage and has muddied things a lot because I think that many of the things that came out and were leaked were lies. If I'm honest, my brother had already made up his mind, what happened is that a contract had to be drawn up that was very long and that was going to tie my brother until 2035 and it couldn't be made public overnight.
"Things happened that tainted what Athletic wanted to achieve, like the vandalized mural. Then they went to my brother's house and smashed a car window. These are things that are not known and that also take their toll on the player and what he has decided. It's very easy from the sofa in every house to think how you do this or don't say this when you're suffering. For me, seeing my brother suffer as Athletic captain is not easy."
