Mr Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), says the Board will always adhere to its primary role of promoting sustainability initiatives and environmentally friendly mining practices.
He explained that sections 31G and H of the GoldBod Act clearly spell out the functions of the Board, dismissing claims that it was promoting illegal mining.
Mr Gyamfi, speaking in Accra on government’s commitment to the fight against galamsey, said it was unfair to blame GoldBod for challenges confronting the country’s mining sector.
He stressed that illegal mining had existed for decades and had reached alarming levels long before the establishment of the Board.
“The role of GoldBod is clearly defined in law – to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly mining. We do not have the mandate to fight galamsey. That responsibility rests with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its agencies,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi said within five months of its establishment, GoldBod had donated five Toyota Hilux vehicles and GH¢5 million to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, with plans to provide additional logistical support.
He said the assistance was to strengthen the national fight against illegal mining and to complement the government’s efforts to protect the environment.
