A team from the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat at the Ghana Police Service has engaged personnel of the Upper West Regional Police Command on the 24-Hour Economy policy as part of efforts towards its successful implantation.
The team, led by Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Benjamin Aniah, the Director of the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, Ghana Police Service, assured the residents of the region of the police’s preparedness to provide maximum security to ensure the successful implementation of the policy.
Chief Supt. Mr Aniah said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had established the Secretariat with seasoned officers, to guide the Service in aligning its operations with the policy implementation.
He explained that the engagement was to sensitise the officers to understand why they needed to support the 24-hour economy implementation.
He said the Upper West Region had significant potential for economic growth through agriculture and agro-processing under the initiative, particularly in shea butter, maize, cassava and yam, among others.
“Our duty as police officers is to provide the security framework that will enable such opportunities to thrive,” he said.
He said the policy was entirely a private sector-based initiative envisioned within the context of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, which was created out of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Act.
DCOP Mr Darko Offei Lomotey, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, assured the public that as the government implements the 24-Hour Economy policy, security would not be compromised despite manpower challenges.
He observed that policing was not necessarily about numbers but about planning, strategy and operational deployment and expressed confidence of the police providing the needed security.
DCOP Lomotey noted that crime rates in the region had declined, with incidents of robbery significantly reduced, and urged the media and the public to continue cooperating with the police to sustain peace and stability.
