Ghana and Japan sign MoU to deepen education ties

Ghana and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in education, focusing on digital skills and sustainability.

The agreement, signed between Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), aims to promote inclusive, high-quality education and equip Ghanaian youth with essential digital competencies for sustainable development.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry of Education and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

The partnership seeks to enhance institutional capacity through teacher training, joint curriculum development, and the promotion of green skills within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to prepare the youth for emerging sustainable industries.

Mr Iddrisu expressed profound gratitude to the government of Japan and MEXT for their longstanding friendship, technical support, and shared vision for educational advancement.

He noted that the collaboration “transcended bilateral cooperation, embodying a shared belief that education was the most powerful tool for building peaceful, resilient, and sustainable societies.”

Ghana, the Minister said, drew inspiration from Japan’s focus on community-based learning, environmental stewardship, and holistic student development, and was eager to integrate these into its ongoing educational reforms.

“The collaboration is strategic, timely, and transformative as Ghana implements its Education Strategic Plan (ESP 2018–2030) and works towards a knowledge-based economy,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the initiative, expressing confidence that the shared vision, mutual learning, and structured cooperation would yield tangible outcomes.

He acknowledged Japan’s global leadership in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), with reference to the UNESCO ESD Centre in Okayama and its consistent hosting of World Conferences on ESD.

These efforts, the statement said, reflect Japan’s commitment to fostering knowledge, values, and behaviours essential for a just and sustainable society.

It said Ghana fully embraced ESD as a core pillar of its education transformation agenda, viewing education as a key driver for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

The statement noted that Japan’s continued support through initiatives such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Project for Improving the Quality of Primary Education through Teacher Development, and the Sakura Science Exchange Programme continued to positively impact education in Ghana.
