Former Asante Kotoko and WAFA midfielder Umar Bashiru has taken the next step in his professional career, signing with newly promoted Iraqi Stars League club Al Mosul ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 28-year-old Ghanaian joins the Iraqi outfit on a free transfer following the conclusion of his highly successful stint in Ethiopia, where he last played for Ethiopia Nigd Bank SA.
Bashiru has agreed to a one-year contract, with an option to extend depending on performance.
Bashiru enjoyed a fruitful spell in Ethiopia, emerging as one of the standout foreign players in the country’s top tier.
He was instrumental in Ethiopia Nigd Bank’s historic league title triumph in the 2023/24 season - the club's first-ever top-flight campaign - and was later named the Ethiopian Premier League Player of the Year.
His contributions included seven goals and nine assists, highlighting his importance in midfield.
Before his move to East Africa in 2022, Bashiru played in the Ghana Premier League with notable sides including Karela United, Asante Kotoko, and WAFA.
His journey in Ethiopia began with Insurance FC, later transitioning to Commercial Bank Ethiopia before his final move to Nigd Bank SA.
He becomes one of seven signings made by the club this summer as they seek to bolster their squad for a competitive campaign.
