Tension is mounting in Mpatuam-Aboabo in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region following the fatal shooting of Samson Danquah, Assembly Member for the area, allegedly by military personnel attached to the Asanko Mining Company.
The shocking incident, which occurred in the heat of a community protest, has sparked outrage among the youth, who are demanding swift justice for their slain representative.
According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Danquah had stepped in to mediate between residents and the military during a protest against the killing of another young man, Kwasi Bonsu, who had reportedly been shot earlier by the same security detail. In a tragic turn of events, the assemblyman was himself gunned down.
“We are tired of these killings of innocent residents in the Manso area by the Asanko Mining Company,” one angry youth in an interview with the DAILY GUIDE lamented. “We are pleading with President John Dramani Mahama to immediately intervene to ensure our safety. Are these mining companies only here to extract gold from our lands and make us targets of senseless killings?”
The bereaved youth, visibly shaken and angered, warned that continued silence over the killings could push the community into chaos.
“We may be compelled to turn our area into a Liberia-like war zone if this injustice continues,” they cautioned.
The community has since renewed calls for government intervention, demanding accountability from both the mining company and its associated military personnel.
