The Takoradi Central Church of Christ has donated assorted items worth over GH?1,000000 to support the upkeep of inmates at the Sekondi Female Prisons.
The donation included bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, onions, sanitary pads, toothpaste, slippers, detergents and other essential items.
Speaking at the presentation, Brother Writena Amponsah, a Preacher at the Church, reiterated the church’s commitment to giving back to society and supporting the less privileged.
He emphasised that Christians are commanded by Jesus Christ to visit those in prison, clothe the needy and feed the hungry. He further urged society to embrace ex-convicts and avoid stigmatising them. “Prison is a correctional centre, and anyone can find themselves there depending on circumstances. We must support and reintegrate inmates back into society,” he stated.
Receiving the items, Chief Superintendent Judith Abbiw, Officer-in-Charge of the Sekondi Female Prisons, expressed gratitude to the church, noting that the donation came at a crucial time.
She revealed that the current feeding allowance per inmate is inadequate, and appealed for more institutional support. “As part of our mandate under reform and rehabilitation, we need to equip inmates with skills to help them reintegrate successfully into society. We, therefore, appeal to individuals and organisations to offer free skills training to female inmates so they can become self-employed upon release,” she said.
