There are three main types of broadcasting licenses in the United States: public, non-commercial educational, and commercial. Public broadcasting licenses are granted to nonprofit organizations that provide educational or informational programming. Non-commercial educational licenses are granted to colleges and universities that offer programming that is educational in nature. Commercial broadcasting licenses are granted to for-profit entities that offer entertainment or news programming. Each type of license has different requirements and restrictions. For example, public broadcasters must operate on a non-profit basis and may not air commercials. Non-commercial educational broadcasters must be accredited by the government and may not air any type of advertising. Commercial broadcasters must meet certain financial requirements and may air commercials.
