Ghana’s leading mobile telephony operator, MTN has intensified its campaign against potential subscribers, purchasing already registered SIM cards from vendors.
The network is concerned this illegal practice paves way for fraudulent activities such as mobile money fraud, impersonation, cyber crime and illegal SIM swap among others to be perpetuated.
The Ministry of Communication has recently charged telecom companies and the National Communications Authority to ensure the strict compliance of the Subscriber Identity Module Registration Regulation, 2011 (L.I. 2006).
Interacting with Ultimate Business at a stakeholder engagement forum in the central business district of Kumasi on Tuesday, Acting General Manager for MTN, Northern Sector, Charles Osei Akoto cautioned against the practice which is gaining high frequency across the country.
“To those who pre-register SIM cards, I want to stress that it is a criminal offence. Nobody should pre-register a card before they sell. If you’re going to buy a SIM and it is already registered, see the person selling it to you as a criminal and for that matter, if you can, assist MTN to arrest that person.”
He added: “This act has been helping miscreants to dupe some customers by using a SIM to do transactions; that when you trace the information, it does not lead to them.”
Mr. Osei Akoto further touched on the issue of SIM change, explaining customers risk losing their contacts for life if they do not authenticate their mobile records.
“Also to the issue of SIM change, if someone has already bought a SIM, the individual has to come to any recognised MTN office with his or her valid information so that the SIM can be validated.”
“With this we can change the information into the person’s name; other than that when you lose the number, you lose the number forever no SIM change can be done for you”, he hinted.
The forum which was second of its kind since last year, saw MTN officials and agents in Kumasi connect directly with the general public and get firsthand feedback about their service and products in order to serve them better.
“This year too, we’ve declared it as the “Year of the Customer and that’s we say #WeDey4U. Currently we’re here at Adum with about 108 of our agents going round and serving existing and prospective clients regarding SIM card change, credit transfer, mobile money registration and transactions, loan services, AYO insurance, My Own Pension and other packages.”
