The Local Government Ministry has described as premature agitations mounted by the Asokwa Municipal Assembly to take over the management of the Oti landfill site in the Ashanti region.
Some youth led by the Presiding Member of the Assembly Elliot Banor went on a demonstration on Tuesday and chased out staff of the landfill site protesting the poor management.
The protesters demanded that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) hands the site over to the Municipal to manage contending that the landfill site is situated in its jurisdiction of Asokwa.
The KMA has called their bluff and dared the assembly to go to court explaining that the land was leased to the KMA before Asokwa was carved out of the KMA as a new municipal area.
Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, the Deputy Local Government Minister, Nana Adjei Boateng indicated that the issues of management of the Oti landfill site go beyond ownership of the facility.
He explained that the Oti landfill site still has outstanding debts and contractual issues being sorted out by his outfit and the Sanitation Ministry.
He queried, “It’s not a question of we are a new municipal so we should take over all the facilities that are located within our municipality so we have asked them to exercise some restraint. There are even bills on the facility and are they telling me they are in a position to pay for those bills?”
Nana Adjei Boateng however assured that his outfit has reached out to the chief executives of the KMA and the Asokwa Municipal Assembly to jaw-jaw and address the challenge.
