Ghana’s Education System to become Global Leader after Review

Government says it is committed to ensuring that Ghana’s education pitches itself among the finest across the world with the ongoing curricular review process.

The Deputy Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum gave the assurance when he addressed students at the launch of the 22nd Ashanti Region Students Representative Council week celebrations.

The 2019 annual student week celebration is bearing the torch for a national action towards eliminating the ballooning rate of graduate unemployment in Ghana which has unfortunately become the biggest fear of several Ghanaian students

Speaking on the theme, “Tertiary Education and Job Opportunities in Ghana: Inspiration or Despair for SHS students,” Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum expressed urgent need for Ghana’s curricular to undergo a fundamental review.

Yaw Osei Adutwum decried the system where students are restricted to one career path, with no opportunity to vary their choices.

He recounted several instances of Ghanaians who studied courses in the arts and humanities who have gone outside the country to pursue their passions in medicine, surgery and engineering, missions that are practically impossible in Ghana.

The Deputy Dean of Students for the KNUST, Dr Addai Mensa who was guest speaker, threw more light on the difficulties of the Ghanaian student spanning from getting admission into tertiary institutions; finding money for high school fees and the difficulty of finding unavailable jobs after the hustle of education.

In his annual address, the Ashanti regional president of the SRC Maxwell Angelo Boakye outlined some difficulties schools are facing with the double track system and lack of infrastructure hampering academic work in several schools in the Ashanti region.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education Mary Owusu Akyiaw called for student bodies to be assertive in demanding the best of education using laid out structures without engaging in violence as has been witnessed lately in some senior high schools in the Ashanti region.

She however called for student bodies to expand their horizon beyond their academics to fit into the new intricacies of the job market.

The Student Representative Council in the Ashanti region has for the past 22 years stood out as one of the strongest and well organized student bodies under the Ghana Education Service, with notable footprints in all senior high schools.
