Pressure group, the Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) has warned it will embark on a mass action in Kumasi, if the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Emmanuel Kofi Nti loses his job.
The GRA last week debunked the reported dismissal of Mr. Kofi Nti and two other commissioners.
The AYA however insists the notice of dismissal was to test waters ahead of a crafted ploy to get the tax commissioner out of office.
Executive Committee Member of the AYA, Osei Kofi Acquah told Ultimate News, apart from the numerous measures the Commissioner General has introduced to widen the tax net, Mr. Nti is shouldering the needs of several underprivileged homes in the region.
“The Ashanti region is a major contributor of votes to the NPP and if they don’t want to offend their world bank, they should stay off Mr. Kofi Nti. He is doing a very fantastic job and we see it because you go to every supermarket and there is a tax stamp on products. Individuals are securing their Tax Identification Numbers which means the man is widening the tax net and contributing his quota to the country.”
He went on to recount: “Besides this, he is taking care of a vast number of people which the Ashanti Youth Association is aware of and which we appreciate. He is paying school fees for a lot of people here in the Ashanti region. He is a philanthropist who is giving back to society, what the country has given to him.”
Osei Kofi Acquah further questioned, “Why are people close to the president trying to sabotage him because he comes from a certain region?”
He insisted AYA will not take kindly to plans by some unfaced elements close to the president, to yank him out of office.
Mr. Acquah noted that the party will be pushed to hit the streets and campaign against the New Patriotic Party if the group is pushed to the wall with any adverse decision taken against the GRA Boss.
