The Western regional capital, Takoradi is set to come alive on Saturday March 9, 2019 as the High Commission of Canada in Ghana will host an event to celebrate the 2019 International Women’s Day.
According to the High Commission in a release copied to Ultimate News, women’s full and equal participation in science and technology as students, influencers, professionals, decision-makers and leaders is important for advancing gender equality in Ghana.
While progress has been made in this regard, more remains to be done.
In Ghana, the representation of women in many professional sectors, such as coding, mining and welding, remains particularly low.
Likewise, in Sub-Saharan Africa, only 30 percent of science and technology graduates are women.
The objective is to empower young girls and boys from about 15 junior and senior high schools in the region by expanding their career horizons towards a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
This event will take the form of a career fair showcasing women role models in STEM and will permit young girls and boys, their parents as well as guardians to interact and ask questions about career paths, opportunities and advantages of choosing a profession in STEM.
Careers that will be showcased include: mining, armed forces, welding, health sector, coding, and many more. In all, about 16 career organisations will be exhibiting at the fair.
The event will also feature a music concert by Okyeame Kwame to convey messages from high level stakeholders on the importance of empowering girls and boys and the continuing effort to promote gender equality in Ghana.
About 300 to 400 guests, including JHS students, their parents and guardians, school headmasters, and dignitaries are expected to converge at the Ahantaman Girls SHS at Ketan near Sekondi to participate in the event.
Dignitaries to grace the occasion includes the High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, H.E. Dr. Heather Cameron, the Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area, and Nana Kobina Nketsia V, as well as senior representatives of the Government of Ghana, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Air Forces, Ghana Navy, Ghana Health Service, and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
