Science goes practical as MTN donates 2000 science kits to underprivileged schools.

Students of the Ayeduase R/C Primary School are for the first time, studying science with the very equipment and tools they have always imagined and seen in books Curtsy the MTN Foundation and Dext Technologies limited.

The Project funded by the educational leg of the MTN foundation is targeting to deliver 2000 science kits to 14 selected basic schools across the country.

Science teachers in the earmarked schools are also enjoying free training from Dext Technologies on the proper use of the science kits for demonstrative teaching.

Northern Sector Manager of MTN Simon Amoh was positive the project is looking at a long term vision to build the interest of science in young children who will find technological solutions to Ghana’s challenges.

“The learning of science has always been very abstract to many of us so what we are doing is an exercise to bring these science sets to ensure that they get the hands on practical experience right from the basic level and grow with it. You will agree that technology is ruling the world and science is at the base of whatever technology we want to drive and this is our contribution to the future leaders in this country,” He assured.

The Ayeduase RC primary school found itself under the criteria of MTN supported schools and schools with good performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Its headmistress Ana Omane Mensah told Ultimate News the gesture is relieving as her students had to fall on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for students to catch a glimpse of apparatus in science and engineering labs.

A science teacher in the Ayeduase R/C primary school, Mohammed Amin Bashire who also received free training from the project, admitted the project will bring some practical touch and better understanding in the often dreaded subject of Science in basic schools.

“It is going to make teaching of science more practical. Some lessons that we found it very difficult to explain is now going to be easier in our explanations,” he explained.

The Achiaakrom Junior high school, an MTN Supported school also benefitted a hundred and forty five (145) science kits.

Headmaster of the school Opoku Fosuhene commended the efforts of MTN and underscored the benefits of such interventions to the education of the students.

He told reporter Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “MTN rehabilitated this very block we are standing and in addition they have brought us these science kits. They have also trained two of my science teachers and are doing a demonstration on how to use the kits to the children.”

He was excited, “We have been teaching them science in abstract. We draw everything on the board and we do all the demonstrations on the board. Now it is not only going to be verbal talk but they are going to handle some of the equipments practically.

Speaking to Ultimate News after using the science kits, the excited students told Ultimate Business, MTN can expect a better performance in their final year science examinations.

A form three student, “Richmond Owusu Asamoah recounted, “We just used the kits to study how current flows in a circuit. In science there are so many experiments and these kits will help us very much. This will reflect in our performance and we appreciate what MTN has done for this school.”

“The past students wrote the BECE without the practicalbut I know that for us, we will do better because we will have a better memory about what we studied,” another student Derrick Frimpong Boateng stated.

Co-Founder and chief operating officer of Dex technologies Michael Asante Afrifa said that “the vision is to see that for every science text book that is out there, there is a corresponding science set.”

The deputy education director in charge of inspection with the Ejisu Municipal Education Directorate, Nicolas Basaw describes such interventions from stakeholders and corporate bodies like MTN, as needful in training the future leaders of the country.
