Youth in the Asokore Mampong Municipality have been taken through training on online profiling, digital safety and ethics of building sound digital assets.
The training offered by the EU funded No Business as Usual Hub under its Connected Thinking Series exposed participants to the ethics and impact of digital assets and how this can be leveraged for business and personal branding.
Facilitators from the Learn Again Foundation who partnered the training underscored the great opportunities the Digital space provides for today’s youth to build valuable virtual assets
The training also discouraged Cyber Crime and irresponsible use of social media that has sadly preoccupied the attention of social media influences especially within the youthful bracket.
Director of Learn Again Foundation Jesse Gyau Kusi told Ultimate Business young people could be making and unmaking themselves if they lose sight of the seriousness of social media profiling.
He explained, “The world is a digital village and we are experiencing a digital civilization now. There are things you wouldn’t want your employers to see.”
“Take the pains to go through internet articles of people who have been fired for sharing certain items online. It will amaze you to see how trivial such issues were and yet they got themselves fired.”
“We are connected now more than before. So we need to be careful what we share online because even if you apply for a visa, you apply for a job, or apply for a school,, they go back to see your digital footprints.”
Training coordinator with the NBU Hub, Shaibu Fuseini indicated that the Hub is looking at helping youth of the Asokore Mampong to use social media and other digital platforms positively.
He told reporter Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, “We chose this topic because a lot of the youth in this municipality are using social media the wrong way. I have seen images of people smoking online and once you have that digital footprint, it can never be erased.
He added, “The impact we seek to make is that people will use social media wisely instead of just using social media to just have fun. They can actually build businesses and brands online and be able to sell themselves to the outside world.”
Even before the seminar ended, the young participants had already resolved to delete some images and opinions they had posted on social media.
A participant told Ultimate NEWS, “I think after this program, I will have to delete some posts way back in 2011 and 2012 because that post I made could reject me an opportunity.”
Another indicated, “I have got to be more cautious the way I manipulate my social media handles and even how I comment on peoples statuses and events.“
“I now know that social media can be used as a tool against anybody because whatever you will put out there is what describes you or your personality and my presence here has helped me a lot, a young lady admitted…”
