The Coalition of Non Governmental Organisations in Health has rolled out a number of programs it will advance to pile pressure on government to ensure equitable distribution of health facilities and health professionals across the country.
The coalition made the resolution at its Annual General Meeting in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi.
Speaking to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, the national chairman of the Coalition of NGOs in Health, Dr. Gabriel Gabriel Benarkuu lamented that about 55 districts in Ghana still do not have befitting health centres.
“They can at best boast of health posts without the necessary infrastructure and logistics and so our role is to let government know that every district must have a befitting hospital and the necessary logistical support,” he pointed out.
He is also worried close to a half of all medical doctors are concentrated in Accra and Kumasi leaving the rest of the country under resourced.
:”“There is ample evidence to suggest that 45%of all doctors are in Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and we have only about 60% left for the eight regions. So in fact in some regions at the district level they don’t have a medical doctor. They have to make plans for one to move from adjoining districts to support,” HE OUTLINED.
He points out that the coalition is establishing its footprints in all districts across the country to support the Ghana Health Service to fashion out well researched policies to support Ghana’s healthcare delivery.
He explained, “We have resolved ten cardinal points for 2019 to support our members through ICT and research to do our work through innovation and working closely with the Ghana Health directorates to ensure that we get the right logistical support. We are creating a pool of funding through partnership with universities to generate research so that we can have enough information in all the ten regions.”
“Our mega plan in 2019 is to roll out to all the ten regions to serve women, children, youth and the vulnerable in society and we will also be advocating in the direction of policy influencing,” he added.
As part of its concerns, the coalition expressed need for government to be committed to the Abuja Declaration which enjoins governments including Ghana to commit 15% of its budget to healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The Coalition of NGOs in Health also expressed its utmost disapproval for governments introducing introduction of the Zipline Droan Medical Delivery System which is expected to be used to deliver blood and other emergency health supplies to hard to reach areas in the country.
The coalition instituted a number of research and technical committees to strengthen the research and resource pooling capacity of the Coalition to better serve all its hundred and twenty five member institutions across all the two hundred and one districts.
