Residents living along the airport roundabout Buokrom Estates stretch of the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi are suffering the health hazards of air pollution as a result of dusty roads.
The situation has become worse with the setting in of the dry season leaving the stretch an embarrassment for the region especially for visitors who get into Kumasi by air.
A contractor Attachy construction limited awarded this road abandoned site after building the drains.
“The dust is killing us. See how dusty our cars look. No one even wants to join the cars here. We keep falling sick and all our monies go into medical bills,” a regular user of the road lamented.
“Our shock absorbers are all broken.. he has left a heap of sand here for a long time now. I once run into it while dodging an oncoming vehicle. I don’t know what the contractor is doing here.”a taxi driver questioned.
The situation has become a turn off for customers who come here to patronise businesses on this stretch.
A car wash bay attendant told Ultimate FM’s Faustina Aidoo, “we are losing all their clients because they will not come all the way here to wash their cars and drive back through the dust.”
As the dry season weathers on, the residents now have to literally fetch buckets of water to water down the suffocating dust.
“The contractor has a water tanker but he wil not water the road. Sometimes we have to call for a tanker to sprinkle down the dust. we have to sometimes fetch water in buckets to water the road,” a resident fumed.
Residents are threatening to vote out their assembly member and the Member of Parliament of Manhyia North Collins Owusu Amankwah for showing little concern to their plight.
“We will not vote for them anymore; look at the way we are suffering. The assembly man only keeps assuring us with nothing to show. We the residents of buokrom have decided and he will lose his seat miserably,” the people agitated.
As the harmatan gets stronger; the residents living along the airport roundabout Buokrom estate stretch can only hope against hope that their roads will be fixed. Anything less, they will have to dread days of dust and rough rides on this stretch.
