President of the Christian Service University College Professor Samuel Kofi Afrane has indicated that it was about time private universities begun thinking outside the box to survive in the wake of the ever dwindling number of fresh students entering their institutions.
He made the admonition speaking at the 42nd graduation of the Christian Service University College organized at the school’s Odeneho Kwadaso Campus on the theme “Building strong and sustainable private universities.”
Professor Afrane pointed out that since the year 2013, the market share of fresh students enjoyed by Private Universities as compared to public tertiary institutions has dipped from twenty four percent (24%) to a meagre fourteen(14%) in the 2017 – 2018 academic year.
He noted with concern that “this has serious repercussions on the finances of private universities and warned that players in this sector risk going under, if they fail to fashion out demand driven programs to diversify their sources of income.
He outlined that “one major strategy that CSUC has adopted to surmount this challenge is to diversify our revenue sources and to reduce our dependence on fee income. We have established a centre for research and business development which is seeking to generate additional income through consultancy programs, short courses, workshops and contract research.”
Prof. Afrane added that Private Universities will also need to establish their commitment to offering quality and unparalleled services that can attract students to begin choosing their campuses as their preferred choice for higher learning.
“Our collective and diligent search has led us to a firm conclusion that our future sustainability will depend on the delivery of demand driven programs and high quality services for our clients.”
“The four quality pillars in CSUC are the development of strong ethical values; entrepreneurship mindsets; leadership influence and problem solving capacities and we have initiated steps to achieve this quality growth agenda in the next three to four years,” he announced.
In a speech read on behalf of the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education Professor Kwesi Yankah, the acting Executive secretary of the National board for professional and technical examinations Sheila Naa Boama reiterated Governments commitment to mitigating factors threatening the sustainability of private universities.
Professor Kwasi Yankah advised students to hold on to the Christian and academic training imbibed in the Christian Service University College to stand their moral grounds at a time corruption appears to be the order of the day in the Ghanaian society.
“To be morally accountable is crucial in the complex times we operate because the most dangerous weapon education can inject into any modern society is to release intelligent people who are low in moral accountability,”the statement advised.
The 42ndgraduation of the Christian Service University College saw four hundred and thirty four (434) graduates made up of 84 post graduate students, 302undergraduate students and 24 certificate holding students.
The students offered a variety of graduate and post graduate courses in Business Administration, Health and Allied sciences; Computer Science and Theology with Administration.
The school has also gained accreditation for the running of some new courses beginning in January 2019 including Physician Assistant-ship Studies; Basic Education and Early Childhood Education.
Another flagship masters program which is expected to kick start in January is the masters in Corporate Planning; the first of its kind in Africa expected to train corporate and public executives in planning, resource mobilization and competitive positioning of their institutions in the ever evolving world of business and public administration.
