As part of strategies to economically empower individuals and communities, the MTN Ghana Foundation has built the capacity of the Juaso Palm Oil Producers in the Asante Akim South District of the Ashanti region.
The women who numbered more than 50 were taken on tour to the Serendipalm Company Limited at Asuom in the Eastern region to learn at first-hand, safe and best methods of processing on Thursday December 6, 2018.
The MTN Ghana Foundation in 2017 established an ultra-modern palm oil refinery in Juaso to add value to the raw fruit and also boost local oil production.
According to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Ghana currently produces 243,852 tons of palm oil and this is mainly done by small-scale farmers.
Speaking to Ultimate Business, Economic Empowerment Advisor at MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Mills mentioned that “MTN decided to bring the women in palm oil production at Juaso to tour this facility, to have a look at how organized the women who do palm oil production handle their affairs here.”
“We want them to learn what happens from the beginning when the fruit is collected, to the processing line, to the fact that everything is well organized in terms of safety, cleanliness and orderliness”, Mrs. Mills mentioned.
“These women work in groups of ten and there are group dynamics they’ve been taught aside other several things.”
She was optimistic the visit was going to encourage and motivate the Juaso team to do its work diligently and accordingly interact with each other, in case of difficulties.
“These group works will enhance what they do at Juaso and if they have any issues, they’re going to exchange contacts and call for assistance.”
On his part, Production Manager of Serendipalm Company Limited, Andrew Owusu Bempah, who took the ladies through the production line explained why it was imperative to observe all the necessary safety measures.
He underscored the reason that beyond, avoiding accidents and injuries at the factory, customer satisfaction should also be a priority because that would translate into revenue for their hardwork.
The Juaso Palm Oil Producers also expressed their gratitude to the MTN Ghana Foundation for supporting them through such a venture.
