Thousands of youth in government’s youth in afforestation program in the Ashanti Region are threatening to picket at the Ashanti regional office of the forestry commission on Tuesday.
The workers are angered they have not been paid their salaries since July this year after risking their lives planting trees in reptile infested bushes.
They are resorting to this action after they failed to obtain police permit for a massive demonstration on principal streets of Kumasi.
An aggrieved worker who spoke to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador on condition of anonymity outlined that all the workers will converge at the Adum office of the forestry commission to communicate their displeasure to the management of the Commission.
He lamented, “We have been working since July and we have just received one salary and that was even paid in October. When they were giving us our appointment letters, they assured us that it was a donor funded project with funds already available for us.”
He indicated that though they had been assured that their salary arrears were to be paid in November; all calls to seek explanation for the delays have proven unsuccessful pushing them to take this action.
