The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has taken a giant step which should see the hospital raise funds to retool its equipment’s and build on the hospital’s infrastructure.
The hospital has launched an endowment fund to be overseen by an eleven member board of trustees to raise close to 300 million cedis seed capital.
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital began its operations in the year 1955 as a primary health care provider catering for an average of a hundred outpatient cases a day.
The hospital has evolved into a tertiary teaching hospital and a training centre for specialist and general medics, attending to a thousand outpatients each day.
KATH now does 9000 deliveries and 20 thousand surgeries each year serving patients from eight regions of Ghana as well as patients from Burkina Faso and Cote D’Ivoire because of its Specialist Units and its geographical location.
Despite this growth, the hospital is plagued with a gaping equipment and infrastructural gap hampering its operations.
Speaking at the launch of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Endowment Fund conceived to help bridge this gap, the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso gave a rundown of the amount of money the hospital will need to achieve its aim of becoming a centre of Excellence.
He outlined that about 70 million Ghana cedis will be required to ensure the comprehensive retooling of the hospital. The need for expansion of existing clinical facilities and also new ones to offer new specialist services will also entail a further investment of 50 million Ghana cedis bringing the total required investment to 120 million cedis. The needed facilities include centres for cardio vascular surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, transplant surgery, fertility services, central laboratory and general stores in addition to the expansion of a psychiatry and diabetic care centres in the hospital.”
He added that “the amount excluded the projected 120 to 140 million US dollars that will be needed to complete the hospitals 43 year old maternity and children’s block projects.”
Board Chairman of the Hospital and paramount chief of the Bompata Traditional Area Nana Amponsa Efa Apinten expressed need for the public to appreciate the enormity of the responsibilities of the hospital and support same.
He beckoned, “The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has a big catchment area. In fact it is a hospital which without any extravagant exaggeration serves about eight regions. But the hospital as most of you are aware is facing monumental challenges. I am confident that people will be generous with their pledges and contributions to make sure that we have a seed capital from which we can increase our operational activities.”
The launch witnessed a huge show of charity with banks, medical suppliers, corporate bodies, members of parliament and individuals pledging handsome amounts to capitalize the endowment fund.
An eleven member board of trustees made of eminent personalities with two representatives each from the hospitals management and board was also sworn in to oversee the investment of the Endowment Fund.
The board of trustees is made up of Mr. Kwabena Kesse KESBEN Group of Companies; Nana Adjoa Dokuaa managing director of Beauty Queen Hotel, Dr K.K. Sarpong Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation; Opoku Boama Chief Executive of Poku Trading Enterprises Limited; Mrs Nixson Akuamoah Boating a Health Development Consultant, Mrs Gladys Owusu Akyiaw Chief Executive of Royal Lameta Hotel and the Ashanti and brong Ahafo chair of the Association of Ghana Industries and Alhaji Kamil.
The board also has two representatives of the board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mr Charles Dontor and Dr Kofi Osei Afoakwah.
Two members of the management of the hospital Dr Obiri Danso Chief Executive Officer of KATH and Nana Akyiaa Asante the Directror of Finance are also represented on the board of Trustees.
