Senior lecturer with the Ashesi University Professor Stephen Adei has indicated that President Nana Akufo Addo’s fight against corruption will yield little if it does not trickle down to individual state institutions.
He wants the president to explore the opportunities that technology presents, to cut out the human element that breeds corruption in state institutions.
According to the economist and governance analyst, the establishment of the office of the Independent Special Prosecutor’s Office sends a clear message about the president’s stance against corruption.
He however fears the canker of corruption will continue to fester if practical steps are not taken in individual public offices to nip it in the bud.
He pointed out, “fighting corruption begins from the top and hence the presidency but if people are not seen to be punished when they do what is wrong, corruption will not stop. The president has taken a bold step to set up the office of the Independent Special Prosecutor but he needs to do more.”
“But the human element where people have to visit offices to seek services is an incentive for people to continue demanding bribes and frustrating people who refuse to give in.”
“If there is electronic transactions that pertains in other countries, a lot of these acts will not happen,” he added.
Professor Adei is also calling for individual Ghanaians to be aggressive insisting that they will not give bribes whenever they access services from public offices.
He insisted that, “If you went to an office and insisted that you needed to be served and persisted that you will not pay anyone any bribes or add any envelope, things will begin changing.”
Meanwhile, the Scripture Union charged Christians to take the lead in the fight against corruption.
Speaking to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, the Ashanti regional Manager of the SU, Rockson Antwi contended Christians need to bow their heads in shame if acts of corruption are occurring under their watch.
This year’s SU Annual Conference was held under the theme, “effects of corruption in Ghana and required Responses.”
