Prominent sports journalist Veronica Commey has voiced concerns about the future of Ghana’s Black Queens following the departure of head coach Nora Hauptle, who has taken up a new role with Zambia’s Copper Queens.
Hauptle, who successfully guided the Black Queens to qualify for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), left her position due to a lack of games and inadequate preparations for the team.
Commey fears the Black Queens could face a challenging period in the absence of strong leadership and consistent direction. Reflecting on Hauptle's impact, she stated in an interview with Channel One TV
The team was progressing in terms of quality. So if I have to reminisce, it was the only time I have seen the Black Queens close to what it used to be. And it’s a crying shame that we have to lose Nora. Not because we didn’t want to continue, or she didn’t want to continue, but because we couldn’t find common ground.
Commey highlighted Hauptle’s frustration with the lack of preparation and friendly games leading up to the WAFCON, a situation that likely influenced her decision to leave.
I have seen that in the last few weeks, she had been posting here and there, obviously disappointed in the kind of preparation we’re giving the team. The fact that we are not playing enough friendly games—any coach with his thoughts will definitely be disappointed
But I would have hoped that we maintain her, because with the kind of job she had executed with the Black Queens, it was telling. You didn’t need anyone to whisper into your ears that she would have a lot of suitors. She had built a team that was beginning to look like the Black Queens that first qualified for the World Cup before the Black Stars in terms of the category and nature of the teams.
The Black Queens will face Hauptle’s new team, Zambia’s Copper Queens, alongside 16 other nations in the WAFCON tournament set for July 2024.
GFA failed to meet Hauptle’s demand
Meanwhile, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has revealed that the association was unable to reach an agreement with the Swiss manager as they simply couldn’t meet her demands.
The FA is yet to find her replacement with just six months to the tournament.
