President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sent a strong message to critics of African countries, noting that leaders on the continent are capable of improving the livelihoods of their citizens.
He made this remark while delivering his speech as the Guest of Honour at the swearing-in ceremony of the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
In his speech, President Tinubu commended Ghana for its democratic resilience, noting the successful transition to a new administration as a demonstration of the capability of countries in the sub-region.
It further demonstrates that in West Africa we are capable of democratic and productive endeavours. It is time that our continent’s critics stop forgetting the strides that Ghana, Nigeria and others have made. We need not prove ourselves to them. We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people.
He noted that H.E. John Mahama’s new tenure as president marks a new dawn for the sister country:
I see today a black star rising high in Africa's sky. This black star shines over this nation and its race spreads across this continent with a sense of shared history, hope, compassion, unity, devotion to our common welfare. While others may seek to demean Africa and keep brothers pitted against brothers.
President Tinubu assured President Mahama of Nigeria’s commitment to build stronger ties with Ghana:
My dear brother, I am here to work with you. You know you can count on Nigeria's support at any given time you call on me. We are your brothers and sisters, we shall always be there for you.
I am confident that under the leadership of President John Mahama, the new government will work with Nigeria to strengthen this powerful bond, leading to greater shared progress and prosperity for the people of our two nations. I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress.
The presidential inauguration event held at the Blackstar Square in Accra was graced by several African leaders, including Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Wonie Bio, among several others.
