In Northern Region: Students of St. Vincent College go on rampage; eject teachers from bungalow

This follows the non-payment of their allowance.

Some angry students of the Saint Vincent College of Education at Yendi in the Northern region on Thursday seized a teacher’s bungalow and tried to eject two staff of the school following protests against payment of an allowance.

The teacher trainees said documents available to them suggest that the college has now been absorbed by the state and so they were no more private students.

According to them, they have sent a petition to the Education Ministry through the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive asking for the government to start paying them a mandatory student allowance since they believe that they have been absorbed by the state.

The president of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Issac Nilmo told Accra-based Starr FM that the two staff were targeted because they meddled in the affairs of students and influenced decisions made by school authorities.

According to him, students were about to mount roadblocks and force the staff to vacate the bungalow when the police arrived at the scene to restore order. No arrests were made.

Nilmo said that students will stage a street procession today, Friday to follow up on the petition they presented to the MCE over the matter. He added that the students would boycott classes on Monday if they do not “get anything concrete.”

“We are demanding that the full status of the college be published; as to whether the college is a public college or private, and if the college is a public college, we’re are demanding for immediate inclusion of the college in the ongoing teachers trainees allowance.

“We are also saying, if the college is a public college then government should as a matter of urgency release funds for the completion of our new campus, because currently where we are, we are about 400 students and we are forced to depend on only three lecture halls to study,” he said.
