The former Hearts of Oak winger had the opportunity to join Arsenal after glittering display at the U-17 World Cup in 1999.
Bernard Dong Bortey has revealed that Tony Adams, who was the skipper of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, the French trainer jetted off to Ghana to talk about a possible move to the London side.
Bortey was one of Ghana’s best performers in the 1999 FIFA World Cup as the Black Starlets finished third in the competition.
According to the ex-Hearts of Oak winger, he was a major transfer target for several European powerhouses including Arsenal, Manchester United and Juventus.
"Tony Adams, the skipper of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger were in Ghana just to buy me after the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup in New Zealand.
"I was at the time playing for Ghapoha, but I wasn’t allowed to leave because they said I was a minor. Clubs like Manchester United and Juventus were all chasing me," he told Ghanaweb.
Dong Bortey who was playing for Tema Ghapoha after talks with Arsenal fell through, joined local giants, Accra Hearts of Oak.
He won the CAF Confederations Cup with Hearts of Oak and also played a key role to help Aduana Stars to win the Ghana Premier League, after he had done it with Hearts.
