Education: Minority threatens legal action over government's decision to hand over mission schools

President Nana Akufo-Addo is promising to give back control of missions schools in the country to the churches.

The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak has cautioned the Akufo-Addo government to terminate its plans of handing over mission schools in the country back to the churches or face legal action.

Speaking at the graduation of Trinity College in Accra Saturday, the President said the move will restore discipline, hard work and integrity that has characterised the church.

"The tradition of discipline, hard work, and integrity that characterised the churches...are needed in our country," he said.

"That is why my government is keen on restoring more control back to the churches over the missionary schools,” he added.

The Christian Council of Ghana has been advocating for the reversal of a 1984 take-over of their schools set up during colonial rule to provide Christian education.

Most Christian leaders express worry at the deterioration of discipline and moral values in the mission schools which they see as their legacy.

But the Minority Chief Whip argues that handing those mission schools back to the churches will be in contravention of the laws of the country.

“There may be constitutional issues that some of us will test at the Supreme Court because you cannot hand over national assets to one group”, he told Accra-based Joy FM.
