It is now public knowledge that former Ghana Black Stars striker Junior Agogo has been battling a popular disease known as aphasia for some time now.

He recently opened up on his quest to regain his speech after suffering a stroke to the BBC.

Agogo, 38, was featured in the BBC Four documentary ‘Speechless’ which chronicled his battle, along with others, with aphasia.

Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write.

It comes as a result of injury to the brain which is commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals.

Nevertheless, brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma, brain tumours, or from infections.

 

Aphasia can be so severe that can make communication with the patient almost impossible, or can be very mild.

It may affect mainly a single aspect of language use, such as the ability to retrieve the names of objects, or the ability to put words together into sentences, or the ability to read.

Some of the common varieties of aphasia are Global Aphasia, Broca's aphasia, Mixed non-fluent aphasia, Wernicke's aphasia, Anomic aphasia, Primary Progressive Aphasia and other varieties.
