Kenya Election: Kenya spent $500 million on election annulled by Supreme Court

In a new pre-election economic and fiscal report released before the Aug. 8 polls, Kenya’s national treasury said the preparation and execution of the election will cost $480 million.

Kenya spent nearly $500 million to conduct the August 8 elections which has been annulled by the country's Supreme Court.

In a  pre-election economic and fiscal report released before the Aug. 8 polls, Kenya’s national treasury said the preparation and execution of the election will cost $480 million.

The electoral commission got the largest allotment in the budget and used almost $413.2 million to hire personnel, procure election materials, conduct voter education exercises, besides collecting and transmitting results.

In addition, some $38 million was spent on enhancing security in hotspot counties and border areas.

Kenyans will be heading to the polls again on September 1 to choose a new leader after the August vote as quashed by a 4-2 Supreme Court decision.

The big question now on the minds of Kenyans is where the money will come from to finance the September 1 vote.
