This is not the first boycott of school over a fashion statement
A stand off over appropriate school wear has led to a boycott of school by students at a high school in South Africa.
The pupils of Hoerskool Pretoria Wes are boycotting classes demanding to wear skinny pants instead of normal ,accepted school uniform which they claim is “too big” for them.
To circumvent the school’s rule of not allowing pupils into the school yard wearing anything other than the prescribed uniform and cut, many decided to wear skinny pants inside and the normal cuts on top of the tight-fitting pants, thus fooling the security guards manning the school gates.
Once inside the school premises the plan unfolded. They pretended to go along with teachers’ instructions but suddenly took off the normal-size pants and pulled out posters expressing the grievances they have had from the beginning of the school year.
They refused to go to class and instead staged a protest inside the school premises.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi says pupils have not followed the right procedure by lodging a formal complaint with the School Governing Body since they started protesting on Friday.
Lesufi says he feels let down and disappointed by the pupils.
“I’m taken aback, I don’t know why. My honest fear to that trend is something that may set precedent within the schooling environment, so I don’t want anything that may set a wrong precedent within the schooling environment.
“If they indeed want skinny pants, it’s within their rights to approach the school governing body.”
