The family of the illegal miner wants their son to be given to the late Major Mahama

In the turn of events after the unfortunate murder of the 31-year-old illegal miner at Obuasi-Wawase, the family is seeking for reparations in the form of a GH¢500,000 welfare payment and a befitting state burial for their beloved.

Kwabena Agyemang was a victim of government’s effort to combat galamsey in the country, shot by one of the over 400 armed police and military personnel deployed to various mineral mining areas while exploring for gold in Obuasi.

According to the family, the deceased was the sole dependent for all their financial needs and his deliberate murder means that they have on one to depend on.

They have therefore asked government to compensate them for their loss to help the family survive.

“We believe they did that because of the Denkyira Obuasi incident, the military are over reacting. They should also take care of all the expenses for the funeral. President Akufo-Addo should treat our brother the same way Major Mahama was treated else they will face our wrath”, a member of the family told journalists.

Major Gariba Pabi, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Operation Vanguard, the team deployed by the government to end the reign of illegal mining in the country said,

“We are in the Ashanti region to carry out His Excellency President Akufo-Addo’s initiative against galamsey. Today, our personnel from Ashanti region on patrols around Wawase area chanced upon galamseyers who threw stones at them and fired gunshots”.

He further explained that in defense against the hostility of the illegal miners, they were forced to fire warning shots to scarce them away. It was not after they had scattered them and searched the area that they found a wounded man.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the AGA Hospital in Prestea.
