AT&T and Cisco announced AT&T Control Center Advanced, a series of new IoT services, including multi-layered security standards, stronger communication protocols, and enhanced analytics capabilities.
The offerings are built and based off of Cisco's Jasper IoT platform, which allows businesses to manage their connected devices, and can all be managed through Narrowband-IoT and LTE Cat-M1 networks, two popular specialized IoT networks. The new services are all aimed at helping businesses easily implement, and then scale up their IoT solutions by addressing some of the more prominent pain points in doing so, such as the challenge of analyzing more data as companies deploy more devices.
Control Center Advanced may not be able to solve the logistical challenges that often hold back IoT adoption.
- Logistical hurdles hold back IoT adoption. Implementing the IoT is hard, since companies need to choose a network, spend lots of money, retrain their workforce, and often hire new workers with the right skills to manage their connected devices. That's a long, and often costly process that limits the number of companies that adopt the IoT — 46% of IoT providers say system integration is the top challenge they face in developing an IoT solution for their clients.
- Control Center Advanced helps, but doesn't completely solve that problem. By allowing companies to more easily deploy and scale up their IoT solutions without needing to worry as much about security, the company is easing the pains associated with implementing the IoT. But it doesn't eliminate that pain entirely. Many companies still don't have the resources in-house to conduct an IoT implementation and then manage these systems, and Control Center Advanced doesn't do that. What's more, there are other services that do — Microsoft's IoT Central, for example — which could make Control Center Advanced might be even less enticing.
