Ghana walloped Ethiopia 5-0 in the opening 2019 Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Asamoah Gyan the skipper of the team scored the match opener to hit a milestone of 50 goals on the evening and the captain’s arms band was customized to celebrate him.
The 31-year-old was substituted from the game and instead of a direct handing over of arms band to Andre Ayew, a new band was given to Andre Ayew.
This has fuelled the speculation that there is a bad blood between the skipper and his deputy over the Black Stars captaincy.
Gyan, however, says he told Andre Ayew before that decision so people should stop using the captaincy to disrupt the cohesion in the team.
"Captain's armband does not play football. I told Andre of the plan and we agreed before the game even begun."
"There is no need for this talk, what matters is that we won 5-0 so no one should try to destroy the Black Stars." Gyan said.
Gyan goal agaisnt Ethiopia makes him only the sixth African to hit 50 goal mark in international football.
