Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party announced on Wednesday that it has nominated 12 candidates to contest for six seats in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
Polepole said the 12 candidates were nominated from 450 aspirants- 357 males and 93 females- who vied for the nominations between March 20 and March 23.
“The nominees have been appointed according to their qualifications and competency that will reshape the party,” Polepole told a news conference in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
He said names of the 12 nominees were approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and CCM’s parliamentary caucus basing on highly qualified candidates who could represent Tanzania in the regional assembly.
Polepole said CCM’s NEC under the party’s Chairman, President John Magufuli, discussed qualifications of the candidates before their names were submitted to CCM parliamentary caucus for approval.
“The nomination process took into consideration gender balance, equal representation from mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, qualifications and personal integrity,” said Polepole.
He said out of the 12 nominees, six were males and six females, and eight of them were from mainland Tanzania and four from the Zanzibar archipelago.
Nominated candidates from mainland Tanzania were Makongoro Nyerere, Adam Kimbisa, Ngwalu Maghembe, Anamlinga Macha, Zainab Kawawa, Happiness Mgalula, Fancy Nkuhi and Happiness Lugiko while from Zanzibar were Abdalla Makame, Mohamed Nuhu, Maryam Yahya and Rabia Hamid.
Opposition Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) has nominated two candidates while the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT-Wazalendo) has picked one candidate. Enditem
