Ghana’s boxing community was thrown into a state of shock and mourning following reports of the death of light heavyweight boxer, Ernest Akushey.
Baubali, as he’s known among local boxing fans, died at the LEKMA Hospital yesterday after a short bout with sickness.
His demise came as a blow to followers of the sport having been defeated by Jacob Dickson barely two weeks ago in an explosive encounter at the Trust Emporium in Accra (Bukom Boxing Arena) and which he promised to bounce back.
With a strong social media presence, Baubali commands a very large following on the various social media platforms.
In some quarters, he was likened to the hip-life icon, Shatta Wale, for his ability to thrill fans even when he loses.
Confirming the incident, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) yesterday issued a statement, describing the boxer’s death as a big blow to the fraternity.
“With deep sorrow and pain, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) announces the death of light heavyweight boxer, Ernest Akushey, aka Baubali, at the LEKMA Hospital, after a short illness,” the GBA statement signed by the Ag. Head, Public Relations, Mr Andrew Nortey, said.
The statement described Baubali as a warrior and currently the biggest crowd puller in the sport with a fine personality outside the ring.
The GBA called for circumspection regarding the posts, comments and videos flying on social media, and urged the public to respect the family’s privacy.
