
Black Stars and Arsenal midfielder, Thomas Teye Partey, will battle three other national team compatriots for the ‘Footballer of the Year’ accolade at the seventh Ghana Football Awards, scheduled to take place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on June 14.
Partey, winner of the same award at its maiden edition in 2018, will have stern competition from strikers Antoine Semenyo of A.F.C. Bournemouth and Iñaki Williams of Atlético Madrid for the award.


This was revealed by the vice chairman of the awards’ board, Augustine Arhinful, at the launch and nominee announcement for the event, organised by the Football Impact Africa initiative, Powered by ACTIVATE 360, at the Lenox Bar and Restaurant, Airport-Accra, yesterday.
Sudanese national team head coach, James Kwasi Appiah, will come toe-to-toe with coach Kassim Mingle of Nations FC, Fiifi Parker Hanson of Golden Kick FC and Stephen Frimpong Manso of Bibiani Gold Stars for the men’s coach of the year gong, while coaches Abu Kassim Tabasu of Police Ladies, Joyce Boaitey Agyei (Black Damsels) and Mercy Tagoe (Oaks FC) will slug it out for the women’s coach of the year.
The Black Queens quartet of Alice Kusi of Al Ahli, Doris Boaduwaa of Hapoel Jerusalem, Mary Berko of Police Ladies and Mary Amponsah, formerly of Ampem Darkoa and now with Zhejiang Hangzhou FC in China vying for the Women’s Footballer of the Year awards.
The Male Home-based Footballer of the Year award will be fought by Black Stars and Nations FC skipper, Rakaz Simposon, Faisal Charwetey (Nations FC), Samuel Atta Kumi (Bibiani Gold Stars), Stephen Amankona (Berekum Chelsea) and Rudolf Jnr Nana Kwesi (Swedru All Blacks), while that of the women would be between Mary Berko (Police Ladies), Mary Amponsah, formerly of Ampem Darkoa and now with Zhejiang Hangzhou FC in China, Annabel Bansah (Faith Ladies) and Stella Nyamekye, formerly of Dreamz Ladies but now with Gotham FC.
MTN FA Cup finalists, Asante Kotoko and Golden Kick, are expected to vie for the Male Team of the Year award with Nations FC, Bibiani Goldstars and Hohoe United, with league champions, Police Ladies, Black Damsel, Black Maidens and Oak Ladies battling for the female version.
Black Stars shotstopper, Benjamin Asare, of Hearts of Oak, Emmanuel Kobi (Bibiani Goldstars) and Lawrence Osei (Hearts of Lions) will vie for the goalkeeper of the year; the ‘Odartey Lamptey Future Star’ award will be a straight fight between Black Stars striker, Jerry Afriyie, Black Maidens’s Christiana Ashiaku and Edmund Baidoo of Red Bull Salzburg.
The goal of the year award would be competed for by Razak Simpson (Nations FC V Hearts of Oak), Ernest Numuah (Lyon V Nice), Samuel Prempeh (Young Apostle V Heart of Oaks), Hajara Adam (Black Damsels v South Africa), Baba Alhassan (Fotball Club FCSB v Dinamo), Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth v Southampton), Kofi Tompuo (Bechem United v Asante Kotoko), Raphael Amponsah (Hearts of Oak v Medeama), Tariq Lamptey (Brighton v Leicester City) and Augustine Boakye (St Etienne v Nantes).
Ampem Darko Ladies striker, Mary Amponsah, who scored 15 goals before leaving the shores of Ghana, would be decorated with the goal queen award, with that of the men likely to go to Brekum Chelsea’s Stephen Amankona, who currently leads the Ghana Premier League scorers chat with 15 goals.
Other awards on the night will see DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor (Police Ladies), Randy Abbey (Hearts of Lion), Kwame Twumasi Danquah (Nation FC) and John Peter Amewu (Hohoe United) up for the best Ghanaian club CEO, a special award.
Most Vibrant Club Brand on Social Media will be between Medeama SC, Nations SC and Hearts of Lions, with the Best African International award being contested by Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi and Serhou Guirassy of Dortmund.
