Team Greater Accra defeated Tema 12-9 in the finals of the inaugural Ghana Koshien baseball championship, played at the baseball field of the Labone Senior High School.
The Greater Accra team, consisting of players from the SOTA and Kongo Basic Schools in the Shai Osudoku district of the region, proved too strong for their opponent and deservingly won the trophy at stake.
Featuring at least two females players, Team Greater Accra defeated Cape Coast in their opening game and also accounted for Eastern Region to set up a final with Tema.
For their reward, they received a trophy and certificates.
There were also awards for the male and female MVPs and the Most Disciplined Player of the championships.
The visiting Japanese Keio University Baseball Club defeated Ghana’s Rising Stars 19-7 in a hotly contested ceremonial match as part of activities to round up their visit to Ghana.
President of the Ghana Baseball Federation, Mr Ernest Danso, thanked the volunteers from the Keio University Baseball Club for joining forces with the Japanese Baseball Softball Foundation (J-ABS) to develop the sport in the country.
Mr Shinya Tomonari, founder of J-ABS and former manager of Ghana’s national baseball team, the Rising Stars, said the championship, which is part of a broader initiative, known as the ‘Baseballership Educational Programme’, is to foster character development and life skills through baseball.
