The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Germany international, Bruno Labbadia, as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.
The 57-year-old takes charge of the finalists of the recent TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, following the departure of previous coach, Finidi George.
The announcement, made via the NFF’s social media channels on Tuesday morning, comes just days before the Super Eagles start their 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Dr Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the NFF, confirmed the decision, stating that, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development sub-committee to appoint Mr Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles.”
As the 37th Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Labbadia faces the daunting task of restoring the team’s fortunes and meeting the lofty expectations of the football-mad nation.
Labbadia, a respected figure in German football, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Born in Darmstadt in 1966, the 57-year-old enjoyed a successful playing career that saw him don the colours of several Bundesliga giants, including Bayern Munich, with whom he lifted the league title in 1994.
Labbadia’s coaching résumé is impressive, featuring stints at several high-profile Bundesliga clubs including Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, and Bayer Leverkusen.
His UEFA Pro License and experience in one of Europe’s top leagues suggest a tactical acumen that the NFF hopes will translate to success on the African stage.
Labbadia’s immediate challenges will likely include navigating the upcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and building a team capable of competing at the highest level of international football.
With the Super Eagles boasting of a talented pool of players plying their trade in top leagues, Labbadia’s task will be to forge a cohesive unit capable of challenging for continental and global honours.
