The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled three chiefs in Sabronum, in the Ahafo Ano South District of the Ashanti Region, for their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the area.
The chiefs are Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi, Gyaasehene, Nana Tabiri Gyansah, Baamuhene, and Nana Osei Kwadwo, Akyeamehene.
Their destoolment by the Asantehene was as a result of a petition submitted by concerned residents of the traditional area.
At the sitting of the Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on Monday,
Otumfuo Osei Tutu after destooling the three, referred them to the police for prosecution.
The Asantehene’s decision underscored a zero-tolerance stance on galamseythat threaten the environment and the well-being of the Asante kingdom.
According to Otumfuo Osei Tutu, he had previously petitioned the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to conduct investigations into the trio’s alleged involvement in illegal mining, based on several reports.
The investigation’s findings confirmed that the three chief were indeed involved in and guilty of the allegations, he said.
“You have destroyed the town with galamsey. I was informed of your involvement in galamsey for some time now and not today. The report and its findings are here with me…your names are all written in the report and I have the report for almost four months now. If I allow you to stay, you will completely destroy the town,” the Asantehene stated.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu reminded traditional rulers that they were the custodians of the land, tasked with ensuring its responsible use for the benefit of the community and future generations.
The Asantehene expressed deep disappointment that the chiefs had violated the trust of their people and contributed to environmental degradation.
In the petition presented by the residents to the Asantehene, the Gyaasehene was accused of engaging in illegal mining and contributing to the destruction of River Asuonfou, the only source of drinking water for the people
