A woman was killed by a stray bullet during an anti-robbery operation to arrest suspects at Pigfarm in Accra, last Saturday.
The victim, who was hit, was reported to have been rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Body of the deceased had since been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
A police statement, issued by the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the police had since commiseratedwith the family of the woman who lost her life during the anti-robbery operation conducted at Pigfarm.
“The police with a deep sense of sadness have commiserated with the family of a lady who lost her life during an anti-robbery operation conducted at Pigfarm, a suburb of Accra,” she added.
The statement explained that the operation which had been going on for some time now was targeted at arresting a criminal gang linked to a number of robberies.
According to the statement, the police arrested two of the gang members and thee operation was still ongoing to get the remaining members apprehended.
It said unfortunately, during the operation last Saturday, a stray bullet accidentally hit the victim.
The statement stated that the
leadership of the Police Service had since visited the bereaved family and would continue to support them through the difficult time.
There had been reported cases in the media of stray bullet that resulted in the dead and maiming victims.
In March 2020, at Sogakope in theVolta Region, three persons were hit by stray bullets after police officers fired shots to disperse angry youth of the town who had blocked a bridged over the Volta River.
They were protesting the murder of their assemblyman, and how the police had responded to the incident.
The injured, all males were treated at the Kumbulu and Sogakope Hospitals.
Another incident occurred last year December, when one Bismark Charles Opare, a 29-year old taxi driver, died from a suspected stray bullet discharged during a police operation at Gbi Wegbee in the Hohoe Municipality
