The newly formed University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) baseball team played their first game over the weekend, lining up against Tema Royals in a 5-inning friendly encounter at the campus that ended 11 runs to 1 in favour of the Royals.
It was a good experience for the UPSA team that held the experienced opponents from Tema to a clean sheet in the first and second innings.
Their resistance was, however, broken in the third inning as they went down by 5 runs to nothing due to lack of concentration.
UPSA surprised the visitors in the fourth inning, hitting a low long drive which went through the infielders and outfielders to record their first score.
But that was not enough to stop the Tema Royals side which went ahead to record six more runs to end the game 11 runs to 1.
A return encounter to be hosted by Tema Royals is under discussion by officials of both teams.
Coach Mohammed Ali who doubles as the Director of Sports at UPSA congratulated both teams for the wonderful display of sportsmanship, making sure the exciting game ended without an injury.
Coach Ali praised UPSA team for the fight against the much experienced team from Tema and promised to stage a return game next semester.
He lauded the organisers for introducing the game to the school, adding that, ‘it has come as a boost to sports on campus and those that are yet to identify their talent in sport could consider it.’
He called on the other universities to take up baseball so that it can be added to the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games.
