Sefwi–Wiawso Police investigates Omanhene over illegal demolition

The Sefwi-Wiawso Divisional Police Command is investigating a case in which Nana Katakyie Kwasi Bumangama, Omanhene of Sefwi-Wiawso Traditional Area is alleged to have instructed his agents to demolish a fence wall being constructed on a plot of land owned by a private developer at Sefwi-Wiawso.

 

The private developer, Mr Godfred Andoh, who is a businessman and citizen of the town, was said to have secured a building permit from the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal Assembly for the project but a group of people purporting to be acting on the orders of the Omanhene, stormed the site last Saturday and pulled down a part of the fence wall estimated at GH¢30,000.

 

The facts of the case are that the land in question measuring 1.25 acres harbouring a cold store facility belonging to the defunct State Fishing Corporation (SFC) was sold by the Divestiture Implementation Committee (DIC) to Mr Danny Adzei Annang of Teshie-Nungua, Accra in May 2002.

 

In March 2003, Mr Annang also sold the land to Mr Charles Nunoo, now a Reverend Minister based in Kumasi who, in turn, sold it to Mr Andoh in March 2018.

 

However, prior to the sale of the property to Mr Andoh, the Omanhene who was enstooled about three years ago, attempted to forcibly assume ownership of it, compelling Rev Nunoo to initiate a legal action against him at the Sefwi-Wiawso High Court.

 

The High Court, presided over by Mr Justice G. A. Kumah, on February 12, 2018 ruled in favour of Rev. Nunoo, declaring him the owner and empowered him to recover the property.

 

It also granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Omanhene, his co-defendant, Okyeame Yaw Berko, their agents, assigns and workers from interfering with the land and awarded costs of GH¢12,000 against them.

 

Dissatisfied, the Omanhene, out of the blue, allegedly sent his agents to the site being developed by Mr Andoh to demolish a portion of the fence wall after invoking curses on the workers, a situation which compelled him to lodge a complaint with the Police.
