Stadium ‘B’, St. Francis Foundation and Flipper emerged victorious at the Hope Performance Tennis (HPT) clinic and club competition held at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Stadium ‘B’ of the Accra Stadium Tennis Academy was winners in the U-12 category, beating Baboo Tennis Club of Tema and St. Francis Foundation of Ashaiman to second and third places respectively.
At the U-14 division, Stadium ‘B’ and Baboo Tennis Club trailed winners St. Francis Foundation in second and third places respectively.
Flipper, also of the Accra Sports Stadium club won gold at the U-16 division and was followed by Stadium ‘B’ and Korle-bu Tennis Club.
The four-day clinic and club competition was organized by HPT in collaboration with the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), Tenolf Sports Ghana (TSG) and Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) for young tennis enthusiast between the ages of 10-17 to identify young tennis talents.
Stadium ‘B’ represented by Caleb Aryettey and Aaron Armaah defeated Kwesi Frimpong and Nicholas Bawa of Baboo Sports 6-1, 6-3 in the U-12 finals. Representing St. Francis Foundation, Kenneth Adjokatse and Amos Asante triumphed over Stadium B’s Bright Nortey and Ishmael Nii Nortey Dowuona 6-2, 6-6 (with 7-0 tie breaker). Asokwa Micheal and Daniel Tagoe of Flipper beat Ishmael Nii Nortey Dowuona and Bright Nortey of Stadium B in the U-16 finals 6-4, 6-3 respectively.
Aleona Naa Akrong and Cindy Aidoo of the Winneba Sports College defeated Anna Garruba and Yayra Kumashie of St. Francis Foundation in an exhibition match which ended 10-2 in the girls’ category to win gold.
Interacting with the media, the president of HPT Mr. Enock Godi declared his intention to expand the sport to other parts of the country in the coming years.
“Hope Performance Tennis intends to take tennis to other parts of the country in the next five years, where the sport is not well known. It has been a good and an amazing experience to see the kids come out to enjoy themselves,” he said.
Individual outstanding players and coaches were also honoured at the end of the event. They include Isaac Aku Aku of St. Francis Foundation who was crowned the best player and well behaved athlete of the tournament.
The Coach of Baboo Tennis Club was crowned Coach of the tournament while the 37 Military Tennis Club won the well behaved team honours.
