Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah has expressed optimism over the Black Stars’ chances of qualification to the next AFCON in 2019 despite the shocking loss to Kenya on Saturday in Nairobi.
The Black Stars created several goal scoring opportunities that if the attack had been prolific would have killed the game off as early as the first half.
They paid dearly for that with a late first half own goal by Ghana defender, Nicholas Opoku which the Black Stars failed to equalized.
But Kwesi Appiah remains confident about the team’s chances, insisting that the Black Stars wasted several opportunities in the game, especially in the first half.
He said the team lost as a result of the failure the score from the chances.
“I believe Kenya did well but we could have done better with the chances we had. We should have at least converted them to snatch a point.
“I don’t think we deserved to lose but I’m very sure that we’ll still qualify from the group despite the defeat. We will make sure all the mistakes don’t happen again in the subsequent games,” he added.
Ghana winger Christian Atsu corroborated the coach’s opinion and insisted the Black Stars would not miss out on next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana, by the result, remains on three points, same number of marks as Kenya, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia after day two matches.
“It is football, we lost the game although we had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances,” Newcastle United attacker Atsu told the media.
“We could have won but this is football.
“We just have to focus on the next game which is the most important thing to do now.
“There is nothing to be afraid of.. For sure Ghana will qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.”
For their next assignment, Ghana plays Sierra Leone in a double-header next month.-Goal.com
