A Kumasi High Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Rosemary BaahTosu, last Friday sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi to life imprisonment for the murder of Victoria Dapaah, also called Maadwoa in April 2023 at Adum in Kumasi. The seven-member jury voted 5-2 to pass the verdict of murder on Inspector Twumasi of the Police SWAT unit.
Victoria Dapaah was found dead in a pool of blood in the evening with multiple gunshot wounds in April, 2023 at Adum and several eyewitnesses account implicated the involvement of Inspector Twumasi who was reportedly secretly dating the deceased.
The frustrations of the deceased’s family coupled with public discourse at the time, heightened the suspicion that the police were shielding or protecting their own when Twumasi was not immediately arrested after the crime even though his name popped up as the prime suspect.
The accused, throughout his trial, consistently denied all the charges against him including having an amorous relationship with the deceased, which according to the prosecution, at a point almost collapsed his own marriage. Twumasi also denied that he used his service sidearm or pistol to commit the murder.
Twumasi, after he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, pleaded for leniency citing his responsibility as a father and a breadwinner for his 10-year old child.
The deceased’s mother, Madam AdwoaNyarko said the verdict brought an emotion of mixed feelings of happiness and sadness at the same time. Happy because the family obtained justice for their deceased daughter, but sad because she (their daughter) was not alive to witness the verdict.
She said she was vexed at Twumasi’s plea for leniency citing his concern for his own 10-year old son and described it as callous because he had deprived their daughter’s child also of a mother.
Nana AddoBarimah, family head and Victoria’s uncle, expressed surprise that two of the jurors dissented and voted for Twumasi’s acquittal, but expressed the relief that the family has finally gotten justice for their deceased daughter.
